Plaster sculpture of a Dancing Maenad, after the neoclassical original by Antonio Canova. Handmade by the Nicholas H Wood Studio, England.

This plaster sculpture is a reproduction of Antonio Canova’s celebrated “Dancing Maenad,” a masterwork of neoclassical grace and movement. Inspired by the Maenads of Greek mythology—female followers of Dionysus known for their ecstatic dances—Canova’s figure captures a moment of poised abandon, the dancer’s swirling drapery and turned head suggesting both rhythm and reverie.

Originally sculpted in the early 19th century, the piece is one of several variations Canova created on the theme of the Maenad. Though not formally titled, it is often referred to simply as “The Dancer.” The sculpture blends classical ideals with Romantic expressiveness, revealing Canova’s genius for rendering marble as if it were flesh and fabric.

Handmade in England by the Nicholas H Wood Studio, this faithful plaster reproduction evokes the elegance and vitality of Canova’s original.

Dimensions: 62cm (height) x 20cm (width) x 18cm (depth).
