Hebe Relief

Handmade plaster relief created by Nicholas H Wood Studio. This cast depicts a classical female figure traditionally identified as Hebe, the Greek goddess of youth and cupbearer to the gods. She is shown carrying a ewer and platter, attributes closely associated with her role serving nectar to the gods of Olympus.

The composition is based on a Roman fresco discovered at Herculaneum. A closely matching oval plaque is held in the collection of Sir John Soane’s Museum, where it is described as a woman carrying a pitcher and platter after a Herculaneum wall painting.

The flowing drapery, oval form and finely modelled classical detail reflect the enduring influence of ancient Greek and Roman art on later decorative sculpture.

Cast in fine plaster and fitted with a wall hook on the reverse for hanging.
