Houdon's Écorché Head
Houdon's écorché anatomical plaster head, handmade by the Nicholas H Wood studio. We made the mould from an antique cast (1893) of this rare wall relief.
Jean-Antoine Houdon was the preeminent sculptor of the age of French Enlightenment. He left his signature on this most turbulent period in French social and political history by sculpting "living" portraits of visitors from foreign courts and governments, many of France's leading thinkers, and glamorous singers and actors of the Parisian stage.
The term écorché, meaning literally "flayed", came into usage via the French Academies (such as the École des Beaux Arts) in the 19th century. This form of study still continues at traditional schools throughout the world.
Dimensions: 37cm (height) x 27cm (height) x 5cm (depth).
