Nelson's "Death Mask"
Plaster cast replica of Lord Admiral Nelson’s "death mask", handmade by the Nicholas H Wood studio.
Lord Admiral Nelson was a British naval officer and national hero, best known for his leadership during the Napoleonic Wars and his decisive victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. The so called death mask is now widely believed to be a life mask, taken around 1800 in Vienna by sculptor Franz Thaller for the purpose of creating a marble bust, rather than being made after Nelson’s death in 1805. There is no contemporary record of a post mortem mask having been produced, and Nelson’s surgeon makes no mention of one.
The sculpture has a metal wall hook attached on the back for hanging.
Dimensions: 21cm (height) x 12cm (width) x 7cm (depth).
