Smaller Patroclus Bust
Stunning classical bust, known as "The Companion of Odysseus" or the "wineskin-bearer". This plaster cast is handmade by Nicholas H Wood. This is a smaller version of our popular large bust of Patroclus.
This sculpture is a replica of one of the many Roman sculptures discovered at the Sperlonga grotto in 1957. The grotto is located in Sperlonga, a coastal town in Italy, and it was a prominent residence of the Roman Emperor Tiberius during the 1st century AD.
The unearthed sculptures are believed to have adorned the grotto during the time of Tiberius, serving as decoration and a testament to Roman artistic tastes. The most iconic sculptures found were a group of large-scale marble statues depicting scenes from Greek mythology, particularly focusing on the adventures of Odysseus (also known as Ulysses). The sculptures were found in various states of preservation, some heavily damaged due to the passage of time and exposure to the elements.
The British Museum houses a marble version of this Roman portrait.
Dimensions: 51cm (height) x 26cm (width) x 22cm (depth).
